Poll: Should Kanu Have Been Released?

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, was recently released from detention unconditional and all charges dropped against him. But many Nigerians have questioned the rationale for releasing Kanu who had sought to use Biafra to divide Nigeria. While many have argued that his release will promote peace, others have also reasoned that he should have been tried and jailed as deterrent to others who secessionists.
Should Nnamdi Kanu have been released?

Nnamdi Kanu who is also the director of Radio Biafra and the brain behind the separatist group, IPOB group was recently granted unconditional release by the courts.

Kanu who wants a separate country for the people of Biafra had been operating a pirate radio station from his base in Ireland where he had used the broadcast channel to lampoon the Nigerian government and its leaders.

All the charges brought against Kanu were dropped against by the Department of State Services. Mr. Kanu was arrested on October 17 after arriving Nigeria from the United Kingdom.

Kanu’s detention had sparked a wave of protests in the country

His arrest had triggered a wave of protests in south east states with supporters demanding his immediate release. However, opinions are still divided on the release of Kanu.

In an argument I witnessed recently, some Nigerians have opined that Kanu should have be held, tried and jailed for treason against the Nigerian state.

They argued that if Kanu had been tried and jailed, it would serve as deterrent to other persons who may be nursing the thought of rising against the state.

They further argued that Kanu’s release will likely embolden others to follow in the same path.

Kanu had used his Radio Biafra to pour invective at Buhari and promote ethnic hatred

They were particular peeved that Kanu used his Radio Biafra to promote and whip up ethnic and religious hate while pouring invective on the President Buhari.

Those who argue for his release said it was a good decision by the Nigerian government. They said Kanu’s release will promote peace and unity in the country.

Now the question is: Should he have been released? Tell us what you think.
